DV, OV, and EV Certificate Differences: Which One Should You Choose?

SSL certificates are categorized by the level of verification the certificate authority performs: Domain Validation (DV), Organization Validation (OV), and Extended Validation (EV).
Domain Validation (DV)
DV only verifies domain ownership via DNS record, email, or file-based challenge. It can be issued in minutes and is available for free (Let's Encrypt). Suitable for blogs, personal sites, and technical projects. It does not verify who owns the organization behind the domain.
Organization Validation (OV)
OV verifies both domain ownership and the legal existence of the organization through trade registry checks and corporate contact verification. Takes 1–3 business days. Ideal for corporate websites, SaaS platforms, and B2B services.
Extended Validation (EV)
EV requires the most thorough verification: the CA checks the legal, physical, and operational existence of the organization. Preferred by banks, fintech companies, e-commerce platforms, and government agencies. Takes 3–7 business days but comes with the highest trust level and financial warranty.
Which Should You Choose?
Personal blog → DV. Corporate website or API → OV. Bank, fintech, or e-commerce → EV. Multiple subdomains → Wildcard + OV/EV.
